Skema WPC Decking and structural framing as a design choice
Skema Decking WPC

Skema approaches outdoor surfaces as design elements. The Outdoor line, conceived for terraces, restaurant or café dehor areas, pool surrounds and marine environments, is made of WPC, a composite of wood fibers, recycled polyethylene and additives. A stable product, resistant to weathering and to fungal and bacterial attack, reusable in subsequent installations.

The three collections offer different aesthetic effects: Real emphasizes a more expressive grain; Compact interprets a double-sided ribbed texture; Pacto raises the level of material intensity for high-traffic contexts. Different aesthetic expressions, one shared construction logic: the Outdoor line is the tangible outcome of a design process that starts from technical components and extends to formal aspects.

At the base of the system

In WPC decking, the construction system is the key element. Joists (bearers), supports and fasteners separate the boards from the laying surface, ensuring ventilation, space for thermal expansion and proper water drainage management.

The framing distributes loads, limits deflection and provides the base for fastening. Without a coherently designed substructure, no installation system can perform as intended.

Materials and fasteners

Skema uses extruded aluminum profiles to support the WPC boards and create substructures suitable for different design conditions. The fastening system consists of A2 stainless steel screws and AISI 304 stainless steel metal clips. Not merely a construction detail, but a choice that directly affects the long-term durability of the system.

Single and double framing

Single framing, with the structure arranged perpendicular to the boards, represents the system’s basic configuration for low-build-up flooring solutions. It performs precisely on regular laying surfaces and properly prepared substrates, offering an essential and clearly legible solution.

Double framing, on the other hand, forms a two-layer cross grid, with primary and secondary joists that stiffen the deck and distribute loads bidirectionally.

It is the solution adopted when installing over waterproofed or non-drillable surfaces, where uniform support and structural stability against deformation must be ensured. The grid is a design device that governs geometry, stability and long-term performance.

A design decision

The choice of framing — single or double, with or without adjustable pedestals — is not a discretionary variable to be decided during installation. It is a design decision: it determines long-term mechanical performance, fastening reliability and the perceived quality underfoot.

The framing is what cannot be seen yet can be felt — in the stability beneath each step, in the continuity of the design, in the surface’s ability to remain reliable over time. This is where Skema’s Outdoor line ceases to be cladding and becomes a living surface.
